Mighty Oz buck drives Port Botany volume up 5.6pc in April to 162,205 TEU

SYDNEY's Port Botany volume increased volume 5.6 per cent in April to 162,205 TEU year on year, announced Sydney Ports CEO Grant Gilfillan.


"While Port Botany's container trade has been buoyed by higher imports due to the surging Australian dollar, a solid trading performance by the state's regional and rural export sector has also contributed to the result," he said.


"These figures show that on an annualised basis, Port Botany's container trade volumes are forecast to reach over two million TEU for the first time," he said, according to Sydney's Supply Chain Review.


Container export cargo reached 37,328 TEU in April, which is an increase of 1.6 per cent compared to the same time last year and for the full financial year, they increased 4.9 per cent.


Container cargo imports for April reached 84,522 TEU - nine per cent up from last year. Most containerised imports were sourced from east and south Asia, coming in at 62 per cent of total container imports.


Total trade for the financial year to date was 24.8 million tonnes - an increase of 6.9 per cent from last year. Primary drivers of growth in container export cargo for April were chemicals and machinery and transport equipment as well as motor vehicle parts and accessories.


Cereals, wheat from New South Wales, grew 14 per cent. Other big movers were in April were machinery, transport equipment, manufactures, chemicals and paper products, accounting for 64 per cent of container imports.
