Lufthansa Cargo's pharma hub in Hyderabad opens for business

May 31, 2011 Logistics

LUFTHANSA Cargo's pharma hub for temperature-sensitive air freight officially went into operation at India's Hyderabad airport.

Prior to opening, the location had been certified by the cargo carrier as meeting the requirements for the transport of such consignments, becoming the first station in the carrier's global network to be awarded this status.

"With the certification of the key stations for cold-chain transport in our network we are strengthening our commitment to transporting temperature-sensitive shipments," said Christopher Dehio, senior manager for temp-controlled key accounts.

"In parallel to the certification process, we are further expanding our own fleet of cold chain containers in Hyderabad," Mr Dehio said.

The company said in a statement the process started last December when the airline and the airport operator, the GMR Group, agreed to jointly develop the airport into "the key hub for South Asia for the transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals" to meet the needs of a growing industry."

The first two cold-chain transports from the new hub were transported to Philadelphia and Chicago via Frankfurt aboard a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11, the German carrier said.
