Protectionism grips as 30 new export restrictions imposed in a year: ICC

Jun 9, 2011 Trade

AT least 30 new export restrictions from G20 members from October 2010 to April 2011 have been imposed, despite international accords reached at last year's Seoul Summit to resist protectionism until 2014, according to a range of international organisations.

"This undermines economic recovery," said Jean-Guy Carrier, secretary general of the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). "Given that the results are based on self-reporting, we assume trade protectionism is actually worse."

Mr Carrier appealed to world leaders to get on with accepting the continuously delayed Doha Round of trade talks, reported London's Containerisation International, adding that the data was provided in a joint report by the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the Organisation on Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Committee on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
