France's Alstom wins 500-million-euro deal in Israel

Alstom, France's leading group in rail engineering and power generation, unveiled on Monday a business agreement with Israel to build a power plant worth 500 million euros (729 million U.S. dollars).


"Alstom has signed today an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract worth approximately 500 million euros with Dalia Power Energies Ltd. to build the 835 megawatts gas fired Tzafit power plant in Israel," the group said in a statement.


Under the deal, which "represents Alstom's first entry into the Israeli gas market," the French group will take charge of "the supply and construction of two 417 MW gas-fired combined cycle units as well as associated civil works."


Located southeast of Tel-Aviv, the due power plant will start production in 2014. It is expected to add 835 MW of power to the Israeli national grid, representing 7 percent of the country's power generation capacity.


With a total headcount of 96,500 in more than 70 countries, the French firm posted 23 billion euros (33.55 billion dollars) of sales in 2009-2010 fiscal year.
