Baltiysk-Ust-Luga rail-ferry test a success

Apr 7, 2010 Shipping

RUSSIAN agri-industrial exporter Sodrugestvo-Soya has conducted the first successful test of a single-box rail-to-ferry system near Kaliningrad, which, once operational, can save shippers up to 25 per cent on delivery costs.

The test was conducted using four specialised containers provided by Transcontainer, each of which contained a meal-feed shipment. The boxes were sent by rail from Shpovka Station to Baltiysk, where they were loaded on to a rail ferry and sent to the port at Ust-Luga. From there, the shipment was transported along the Kaliningrad Railway line to TransContainer's terminal at Kuntsevo-2 station. Trucks then hauled the boxes for the remainder of the journey.

The intermodal system, although complicated, is susceptible to much lower tariff rates, and is expected to help exporters significantly cut back on transportation costs.

The Ust-Luga-Baltiysk ferry line is a federal project designed to link the east-west supply chain by serving as an access point for road transport, rail transport, and large roll-on/roll-off vessels.
