Jun 9, 2011 Port

The Port of Oakland secured US$18 million in federal funding to dredge its navigation channel and maintain it to 50 feet (15.4 metres), the US. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed.

Oakland in 2009 completed a 10-year project to dredge 50 feet from 42 feet needed to accommodate 8,000-TEU ships, now common at California ports, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce. But the channels suffer from continuous silting and require regular maintenance.
