Port of Archangelsk posts a 13-percent volume drop, to 1,4 million tons

Freight flows passing via Port of Archangelsk in January-May shrank by 13,4% from the same period a year earlier, to 1,411,500 tons, the Port Authority statistics said.


In the reporting period handling of inbound cargo rose 5.1% to 287,200 tons, while outbound goods increased by 17.1% to 751,000 tons, including 30,300 tons of paper, paperboard and woodpulp, a 22.7-percent growth, 80,500 tons of coal, down 42% from last year’s figure. Exports of oil products rose as much as 1.7 times to 414,200 tons. Handling of timber cargo fell 7.4% to 30,300 tons. The five-month volume of short sea traffic dropped by 47.9% to 372,000 tons.


In May, the port's cargo throughput slumped by 53.4% from the last year’s period, to 371,900 tons. Monthly volume of imported goods declined by 2.1 times to 53,300 tons, exports were down 20% to 175,800 tons, short sea traffic volume plummeted by 70% to 142,800 tons.


The year-round navigable Port of Arkhangelsk seaport is located in the delta of the Northern Dvina River flowing into the White Sea. Cargoes transported via the Northern Sea Route are passing through the port’s terminals. The stevedore companies operating at the port handle a broad range cargo: general, cellulose, cardboard, containers, timber, metals, fertilizers and heavy-lift cargo, suction and grab cargoes. The Arkhangelsk port capacity allows handling up to 4,5 million tons a year. In 2010, the port’s stevedores handled 4,5 million tons of cargo, or 30.1 percent more than a year before.
