Rio to expand 2 box terminals ahead of major world sports events

Jun 7, 2011 Port

RIO de Janeiro's two main container terminals are to be expanded ahead of the FIFA soccer world cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016, which are expected to boost consumer spending and trade.

Jorge Mello, the president of Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro, said US$611 million would be spent by Multiterminais and Grupo Libra, the operators of the two facilities, over the next three years to upgrade the terminals' capacity from a current level of 650,000 TEU per year.

Mr Mello said the aim is to triple container throughput at Rio and the completion of port dredging programme in early July will also assist in meeting these goals, reported London's International Freighting Weekly. This work, along with improvements at Sepetiba will raise Rio's annual capacity to 3.5 million TEU.
