NYNJ Port Authority grants US$1 billion for raising Bayonne Bridge

Sep 20, 2010 Port

THE Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has awarded US$1 billion to help finance a solution to overcome the height restriction imposed by the Bayonne Bridge.

The port authority is said to be determined to either replace or modify the bridge to allow passage to larger ships in order for them to call at its Staten Island and Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, terminals.

Port officials are currently studying options on the best way to solve the problem. Bigger ships are expected to call at New York and other US east coast ports when the expanded Panama Canal opens in 2014, reports American Shipper.

"The Bayonne Bridge air gap problem has been a significant concern to the members of our association for several years," said Joseph Curto, president of the New York Shipping Association.
