A new cradle container by Langh Ship Cargo Solutions enables easy and secure containerisation of steel coils, making it possible to transport coils in ordinary cargo vessels.
The multipurpose ‘Hard Open Top Bulk Cradle Containers’ can be used for steel or bulks, allowing them to transport raw material on a return leg rather than returning empty.
When handling coils the container roof is removed for easy loading and unloading, whilst when used for bulks loading is through small bulk hatches in the roof. Unloading is possible through a ‘letter box’ hatch in the back wall.
“These containers significantly reduce the time taken loading coils and totally remove the need for disposable lashing material”, explained commercial manager Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, who invented the securing system for the coils.
The container can also be used with flexitanks for liquid transportation, with the whole cubic exploited as the properties of the container takes the pressure caused by liquids. With a tare weight of 4.8 tonnes, the payload of the new container is 40 tonnes.
In addition, the company has introduced a 20ft container, made from Outokumpu duplex stainless steel, which is stronger, lighter and has a payload up to 50 tonnes. The company claims that it is virtually maintenance-free as the material never needs to be painted, thus reducing the life cycle costs of the container.
