- The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has signed a Rs.7200m (US$63.2m) agreement with crane manufacturer ZPMC of China to purchase essential new cranage for the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT).
SLPA will purchase three ship-to-shore gantry cranes of greater capacity and operational efficiency than those current in use at JCT. In addition 24 mobile harbour cranes will also be purchased. Although delivery of such an order usually takes around 16 months, ZPMC has certified that it will endeavour to reduce this period.
The Chairman of SLPA, Dr. Priyath Wickrama, is confident that the new cranes, which will meet a long-standing need to replace older equipment at the port, will boost the efficiency of JCT to a higher standard while contributing towards the port's target of emerging as a hub port in the region.
