Guangzhou world's 6th biggest container port in 2009

PORT of Guangzhou lifted 11.3 million TEU last year, up 1.8 per cent year on year, rising to the world's sixth largest place from seventh in 2008, Xinhua reported.

Guangzhou's Nansha port area accounted for 6.56 million TEU, up 2.7 per cent.

The port recorded a throughput tonnage of 375 million tonnes, up 4.4 per cent, also ranking it sixth in the world.

China Shipping handled 4.2 million TEU at the Nansha port area, up 0.8 per cent. Coscon handled 1.5 million TEU, up 0.4 per cent; Maersk, 260,000 TEU, up 4.4 per cent; MSC 160,000 TEU, up 67.1 per cent and CMA CGM, 110,000 TEU, up 7.5 per cent. These five carriers were designated the "most contributive" by the port.

MSC was awarded CNY200,000 for launch of a new line at the port area last year and operating it for 12 months, contributing 81,000 TEU to the port area's throughput.

There are 30 lines in operation at the Nansha with 19 serving foreign trade lanes while 11 ply domestic routes.
