THE World Economic Forum's 2009-2010 Global Competitiveness Report said that the Netherlands was home to Europe's best port infrastructure. The Dutch were also noted for their wet infrastructure, which after Singapore and Hong Kong, was named the world's third best.
The "best port" recognition is a testament to the billions in investment dollars spent on Rotterdam's port and surrounding area over the years, with bulk of funds attributed to roads, railways, terminals, quays, and chemical facilities.
Funding for further port-infrastructure developments in the Netherlands has already reached EUR15 billion (US$19.91 billion) since 2007, and is expected to continue unfettered until 2015, despite the economic slowdown.
