U.S. fried chicken giant KFC is suing a Texas supplier claiming its cups used to hold popcorn chicken caught fire within 13 to 20 seconds after being placed in a microwave, local media reported Tuesday.
Louisville-based KFC claims in the suit, filed in U.S. District Court Friday, that consumers complained earlier this year that their containers caught fire when they tried to reheat their chicken.
KFC says it discovered that Paris Packaging of Paris, Texas, in February changed the ink used for graphics on the packaging so it now includes carbon, which may cause the containers to burst into flames if heated.
Paris Packaging refused to take back the dangerous containers or compensate the company for its costs, the complaint said.
The supplier should have reasonably foreseen that KFC customers would reheat their leftover popcorn chicken, it said.
KFC and its franchise stores immediately recalled the containers since the safety of our customers is our top priority, said KFC spokesman Rick Maynard.
It is unknown how many customers complained about the containers or how much KFC is seeking in reimbursement.
