China to strengthen international cooperation to optimize anti-money laundering legal system

Reporters learned from the People's Bank of China (PBC) on March 24 that, this year, China will optimize its legal framework on anti-money laundering. This includes the legal, institutional and organizational systems, to promote the scientific development of anti-money laundering work.

Recently, the PBC's 2009 anti-money laundering work meeting was held in Hangzhou. The meeting summarized the anti-money laundering work of 2008 and made plans for anti-money laundering and related tasks for 2009.

Su Ning, Deputy Governor and member of the Party committee of the PBC, pointed out that last year was a year for reconciling the link between past work and the future. Policy efficacy of anti-money laundering supervision was more notable, the standards of information systems and data analysis were further improved, the work of investigations in money laundering cases achieved noticeable results, and two specialized campaigns realized significant outcomes. International cooperation has also continuously expanded. Anti-money laundering authorities have played an important role in respects to the prevention and crackdown on money laundering crimes, the provision of assistance in the handling of significant emergencies, as well as the preservation of social and economic stability.

In addition to the perfection of the anti-money laundering legal system, Su stressed that the PBC will establish and perfect a risk-based anti-money laundering supervision system, improve anti-money laundering monitoring and analysis systems, intensify anti-money laundering investigation, monitoring and analysis work. The PBC will also strengthen coordination between themselves and anti-money laundering institutions within its system and other governmental bodies, strengthen international cooperation, and make sure its branch offices fully perform their duties to improve work such as anti-money laundering training and education in information confidentiality.
