Motorola China Slashes 1000 Employees

Feb 12, 2009 Trade

Motorola China laid off almost 1000 employees on Tuesday from its mobile research and development department, the Beijing Evening News reports.

An executive in Motorola China's electronics department confirmed the layoff on Wednesday, without giving a specific number.

But a Motorola financial report for the last quarter of 2008 indicated that the international company sacked some 4000 employees globewide during the period, with three fourth of them from Motorola's mobile-related sectors. However, the officer neither confirmed whether Motorola's global layoffs include the current slashes in China.

According to the executive, the laidoff employees have been compensated by Motorola China according to law.

Though Motorola China cuts workforce here, the company's commitment to China and the strategic position of Chinese market will not be changed, the officer said.
