Intel Moves 2000 Jobs out of Shanghai

Feb 6, 2009 Trade

Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, announced on Wednesday a major reshuffle of its business in China that would see a Shanghai plant closed and its Assembly and Test operations (ATM) transferred from Shanghai to Chengdu.

The move is expected to affect 2,000 Shanghai employees, Reuters reports.

The company says the reorganization is an attempt to optimize manufacturing resources in China and the affected workers would be offered jobs in other parts of the country, including Chengdu in the southwest and Dalian in the northeast, both more than 1,000 kilometres away from Shanghai.

The decision to relocate is up to the employees," Nancy Zhang, an Intel spokesperson, told Reuters.

Despite the move, Intel says it is still committed to a presence in China and would increase its investment in its newly-built Dalian plant.

Following its assembly and test facility closure in Shanghai, the eastern port city will still be home to Intel's research and development center and the firm's China headquarters.
