Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exports Continues to Boom

Bangladesh fetched over half a billion U.S. dollars in the immediate past fiscal year from frozen foods exports as the country's shrimp shipment to global market continued to boom, exporters said Thursday.


We have performed very well exporting shrimp in the last fiscal, Maksudur Rahman, the immediate past President of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters' Association (BFFEA), told Xinhua.


He said Bangladesh earned 534.07 million dollars in 2007-08 fiscal year (July 2007-June 2008) from export of frozen foods, the country's second biggest foreign currency earner after garment.


Of total export amount of frozen foods, Rahman said shrimp recorded more than 95 percent.


In 2006-07 fiscal year, frozen foods contributed 515.32 million dollars of the total 12.18 billion dollars exports earning.


Rahman said, Our shrimp export to European countries, the United States and Japan will see a further boost this year as we have managed to improve quality in line with prescribed guidelines of leading buyers.


Bangladesh has some 94 shrimp farms located mostly in the south western coastal areas involving around 20,000 people directly.
