The Chinese mainland stock markets closed mixed on Thursday.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 8.21 points, or 0.30 percent, finishing at 2727.58 points. The Shenzhen Component Index dropped 11.85 points, or 0.13 percent, to close at 9035.29 points.
Japan
Japan's stocks fell, led by banks, on concern asset writedowns will mount and an economic slowdown will force lenders to increase bad-loan provisions, denting earnings.
The Nikkei 225 Stock Average slipped 129.90 points, or 0.98 percent, to close at 13,124.99 in Tokyo.
The broader Topix index fell 18.46 points, or 1.45 percent, to 1,258.81.
Australia
The Australian share closed marginally firmer, with the banking sector gaining ground and a slightly positive Wall Street adding to the buoyant local tone.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 14.2 points, or 0.29 percent, to 4983.3.
The broader All Ordinaries climbed 11.9 points, or 0.24 percent, to 5030.0.
