Indonesia Foresees 10 Pct Rise in Fuel Consumption

Jun 5, 2008 Trade

Indonesia's full-year fuel consumption is set to rise 10 percent on the back of a growing economy and a rising number of vehicles, local press reported Wednesday.

The nation's fuel consumption is predicted to rise to 39.1 million kiloliters (kl) this year despite the recent 28.6 percent hike in fuel prices.

State oil and gas firm PT Pertamina has said that from January to April, fuel consumption already reached 12.9 million kl, more than a third of the full-year quota, reported major newspaper The Jakarta Post.

Consumption of subsidized gasoline has reached 6.1 million kl in the first four months of this year from a full-year estimate of 16.9 million kl, kerosene 2.9 million kl from an estimated 7.5 million kl and diesel 3.7 million kl from an estimated 10.9 million kl.

Over the past five years the consumption of subsidized gasoline has risen by 5 percent per year due mostly to the rapid increase in vehicles, it said, citing officials with the oil and gad executive body BP Migas.
