South Korea's export of digital goods jumped 15.2 percent in May from a year ago as the overseas demand for mobile phone increased sharply, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said Wednesday.
According to the Ministry, export revenue of digital goods reached 10.94 billion U.S. dollars last month, bringing the nation 's trade surplus in the sector to 4.81 billion U.S. dollars.
The ministry added that the sharp increase in overseas sales of mobile handsets has made the greatest contribution to the export growth. The overseas sales of mobile handsets surged 47.9 percent year-on-year to 1.92 billion U.S. dollars.
"The surge in overseas demand is based on quick responses by South Korean manufacturers to meet local market conditions and overall competitiveness in the country's third-generation phones in the global market," a government official of the ministry said.
Meanwhile, the report showed that export gains to China grew 25. 4 percent from May 2007. The exports gains to the U.S. and the EU jumped 23.2 percent and 13.9 percent respectively, while those to Japan decreased 9.0 percent.
