Qingdao Port, China's second-largest port in terms of foreign trade, saw its cargo throughput up 13.2 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2011, the port's chairman said Saturday.

The port in the eastern province of Shandong handled 96.02 million tonnes of cargo during the January-March period, said Chang Dechuan, chairman and president of Qingdao Port (Group) Co.

Meanwhile, the port handled 3.2 million TEUs (twenty-feet equivalent units) in the first quarter, an increase of 17.6 percent from a year earlier.

Chang attributed the increase to recovering international trade and the port's upgraded information systems.
