Germany's North Sea Eurogate pitched as Asia-Europe trade hub

EUROGATE has launched its Asia roadshow February 28 to March 18 to promote its new Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven, Germany's only deep water port on the North Sea coast, as an ideal transshipment hub for container traffic to Scandinavia, eastern Europe and Russia.

Transit times, depending on destinations in Europe's major import and export regions are shorter than from other seaports, and allow for access to western and southern Europe via the Rhine route, argued representatives of the European container terminal and logistics group.

Ahead of operational start up in August 2012, Eurogate has acquired the largest container gantries from Chinese manufacturer ZPMC boasting jib length of 78 metres for servicing next generation 18,000 TEU, of up to 25 rows on decks, with its terminal draught accommodating 18 metres.

"Thanks to its particular characteristics, the future terminal will be the star of our European terminal network," said Emanuel Schiffer, chairman of the Eurogate Group Management Board in a statement. "We promise our customers high-quality service - this is both a pledge as well as a challenge."

It hopes to attract Chinese exporters/importers, forwarders and logisticsproviders as well as other shipping lines to the road show locations of Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Qingdao, Shanghai, Taipei, Shenzhen, Hong Kong (Island Shangri-La, Pacific Place, 6pm (local time) Monday, March 14) and Singapore.

China's leading shipping lines, Cosco and China Shipping, are already calling at the Eurogate terminals in Bremerhaven and Hamburg with total container volume from China totalling 1.5 million TEU, 27 per cent of German's overall container handling figures.

Eurogate, jointly with Contship Italia, operates a network of nine container terminals from the North Sea to the Mediterranean area and has two new sea terminals at Wilhelmshaven and St Petersburg-Ust-Luga.
