XINJIANG plans to pour CNY30 billion (US$4.6 billion) on civil aviation industry during the next five years from 2011 to 2015, 350 per cent more than the sum in the earlier five years from 2006 to 2010, Xinhua reports.
Xinjiang is to build four new airports, redevelop and expand six airports with the investment. By the end of 2015, the region will have 22 airports in operation.
There are 16 airports in operation in Xinjiang. Last year, the region's airports recorded a passenger throughput of 11.7 million persons, a cargo throughput of 101,500 tonnes and an aircraft movement of 118,600 flights. There are now 52 airlines operating 130 services to Xinjiang with a network coverage of 79 cities.
Besides developing Urumqi into the air gateway for western China, Xinjiang also plans to build Kashgar airport into a local hub in this period.
The region's air cargo throughput is estimated to hit 204,000 tonnes by 2015, with passenger throughput reaching 20.4 million person. Aircraft movement is to reach 210,000 flights.
