Macao to expand commodity supply from mainland: Chief Executive

The government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) will closely work with relevant departments of China's central government in order to expand and stabilize Macao's commodity supply from the Chinese mainland, the SAR Chief Executive Chui Sai On said on Monday.

Chui made the remarks at a cocktail reception celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Macao SAR. He departed for Beijing later Monday to report the SAR government's works this year to the leaders of the country and meet with officials of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Ministry of Commerce on matters concerning the commodity supply.

He said that the SAR government was seriously concerned about the impact of inflation hike on local residents and hoped that relevant departments of the central government could help the SAR solve the issues through expanding and increasing mainland's commodity supply to Macao under a secured supply channel.

The latest official figures indicated that the Composite CPI ( consumer price index) for October 2010 went up by 3.95 percent year-on-year, thanks to the price increase in food and non- alcoholic beverages, miscellaneous goods and services and clothing and footwear.

With the support of the central government, and an expanded and steady commodity supply, the SAR government can further adopt measures that help stabilize the wholesale and retail prices of various commodities, so that local residents can buy mainland products at reasonable prices, Chui said.

The SAR government held a series of activities to celebrate the 11th anniversary of Macao SAR's establishment on Monday.

Chui said in his speech delivered at the cocktail reception that upholding the ideal of working and sharing together, the government has doubled its efforts to further improve employment and the quality of life.
