US-Canada-Mexico trade up 19.3pc in 2010, but 4.8pc below 2008

SURFACE trade value between North American Free Trade Agreement members US, Canada and Mexico was 19.3 per cent higher year on year in September, hitting US$68.3 billion, but that was still 4.8 per cent below that posted in September 2008, according to US Transportation Department.


Surface movement includes truck, rail and pipeline, said American Shipper. In September, 86.9 per cent of US trade value with Canada and Mexico moved over land.


Canada-US surface trade value came to $40.2 billion in September, up 15.7 per cent year on year. Imports by truck were up 10.7 per cent in September 2010 year on year, while trucked export value was 17.4 per cent higher.


Federal statisticians noted that US-Mexico surface transportation trade totalled $28.1 billion in September, up 24.8 per cent compared to September 2009. Trucked imports were 23.3 per cent higher in September than in September last year while trucked export value was 20.7 per cent higher.
