Bangladeshi garment exporters bagged spot orders worth 65 million U.S. dollars for export in the just concluded annual showcasing -- BATEXPO-2010, the country's largest apparel exposition in Dhaka.
President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Abdus Salam Murshedy told Xinhua by phone on Sunday that this year's order was 23 million U.S. dollars more than the previous year. Last year's figure was 42 million U.S. dollars.
Murshedy said the readymade garment (RMG) sector is currently negotiating export orders of 8 million U.S. dollars with foreign buyers and expects to sign deal within two months.
Bangladesh's readymade garment sector is the fourth largest exporter in the world and the number one export earner of the country.
Bangladesh in the last fiscal year (July 2009-June 2010) fetched 12.50 billion U.S. dollars from exports of garment, about 77.1 percent of the total export income of the country during the same period of the year.
BGMEA president said they had fruitful talks with a number of foreign business delegations during the exposition.
Murshedy said the fair which is being held annually since 1989, drew some 14,990 visitors this year that included 162 foreign buyers and 2,870 buyers' representatives.
