Vietnam exported over five million tons of coal worth more than 246 million U.S. dollars to China in the first quarter of this year, local newspaper Youth reported Wednesday.

The state-owned Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group has decided to stop exporting coal in small volume in form of border trade from June 1 to help curb illegal coal mining and trade in northern Quang Ninh province, the newspaper quoted Doan Van Kien, chairman of the group's management board, as saying.

On April 22, Vietnam raised its export tax on coal to 15 percent from 10 percent previously, in a move to ensure sufficient supplies for local energy-thirsty industries like electricity and cement.
