Crops in boxes keep Sydney wharfs busy

Jul 8, 2010 Trade

Sydney's port says a good crop season in regional New South Wales contributed to record-breaking trade in containers in May this year.

More than 152,000 containers were moved in May, an increase of 7.9 percent on the same month last year, reported ABC News.

For the year so far, container trade in Sydney is up almost six percent on the same period last year.

Jason McGregor, senior manager of marketing at Sydney ports, says crops from regional NSW had a lot to do with the increased activity.

"Out of regional NSW, which represents probably about 20 per cent of total export trade coming through, it's been a great month for rural export," he says.

"We've had cereals up a bit over 18 percent on last year and cotton's up 124 percent, which is fantastic."
