Panalpina receives ISO environmental certification

Apr 16, 2010 Trade

EXPERTS from inspection and certification company SGS have certified Panalpina's compliance with ISO 14001:2004 environmental management standards, making it the first company in the industry to meet the global benchmark.

The certification process was part of Panalpina's ambitious PanGreen programme, which was largely designed to help reduce its CO2 emissions.

"We as individuals and as members of a global player within the logistics industry have a moral and civic duty to do everything possible to minimise the impact that our actions have on the environment," Panalpina CEO Karl Weyeneth said. "PanGreen is an important part of that strategy."

Hallmarks of the PanGreen programme include cargo consolidation, modal shifts, paper reduction, recycling and waste-management systems, the limitation of business flights, the lowering of electricity and water consumption, and the specialised handling of hazardous freight. The company also hinted at the possibility of measuring the emissions of its customers, partners, and subcontractors in the future.

The ISO 14001 is part of the ISO 1400 family of environmental standards developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation, which is comprised of a number of advisory committees from across the world.
