Country set to be largest exporter

Dec 28, 2009 Trade

China will "very probably" surpass Germany and become the world's largest exporter this year, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.

"The year of 2009 was the hardest in Chinese trade history, but the nation has made positive headway (in stabilizing exports)," Zhong Shan, vice-minister of commerce, said during the China Economic Forum yesterday.

"There is a high possibility that China will overtake Germany this year, ranking as the No 1 exporter worldwide, and the share of China's exports will rise to slightly more than 9 percent of the world total from 8.86 percent last year," he said.

Buoyed by the global turnaround, declines in exports began to ease since the second half of this year. China's exports fell by 18.8 percent during the first 11 months to $1.07 trillion, according to Customs.
