Gary North, Matson Navigation Co.'s senior vice president of the Pacific, is retiring on April 1 after more than 40 years in the maritime industry, including 27 years with the Oakland-based U.S. Jones Act carrier.

North first joined Matson in 1967 as a cargo planner in its Hawaii freight department. He left the company in the 1970s to work for Seatrain Lines and U.S. Lines, before rejoining Matson in 1987.

Vic Angoco will succeed North as head of Matson's Pacific operations, which include Hawaii, Guam and Micronesia. He will also serve as executive vice president of subsidiary Matson Terminals Inc. Angoco joined Matson in 1996 after stints with APL and Sea-Land.
