Eminent ShanghaiMaritimeUniversity chooses MAN Diesel

Apr 22, 2009 Shipping

A MAN Diesel 6S35ME-B9 engine has been selected by the prestigious Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) in

China as a practical teaching-aid for its newly established maritime laboratory.

SMU selected the state-of-the-art MAN B&W diesel engine to enhance the excellence of its practical and electronic tuition in maritime hardware for China’s next generation of marine engineers. To accommodate the engine, SMU will establish a fully functional, shore-based engine room at its new campus in Lingang, Shanghai.

MAN Diesel will support the venture with both technical and commercial backing in a deal that will serve to spread knowledge of the company’s technology within the Chinese maritime community.

The engine will be built in Korea by MAN Diesel licensee STX Engine Co.,Ltd. as logistical and capacity issues domestically meant a Chinese builder could not be accommodated. The successful conclusion of this deal is in great part due to excellent cooperation between the Shanghai offices of MAN Diesel and STX.

SMU origins

Chinese maritime education has its origins in Shanghai where the shipping section of ShanghaiIndustrialCollege was founded early in the 20th century. Currently, SMU has a full-time student population of almost 15,000.

Over the course of its existence, SMU has devoted itself to fostering qualified personnel for the shipping industry and has provided shipping enterprises, public institutions and government departments with over 40,000 marine graduates. In recognition of this success, the ChineseState has honoured SMU by designating it a “cradle of qualified shipping personnel”. SMU also prides itself on the quality of its staff that comprises a teaching and research body of more than 800 academics, of whom over 100 are full professors.

The ME-B concept

The economical ME-B design utilises a camshaft-operated exhaust valve and electronically controlled fuel-injection system. This design makes ME-B engines well-equipped to meet Tier-II emission requirements, and is an efficient way of managing current environmental, emission requirements.

As with the larger MAN B&W ME-engines, the Alpha Lubricator comes as standard with all ME-B engines, ensuring a very low, cylinder lubricating-oil consumption.

In summary, the ME-B series offers optimal engine performance in powerful, economic and future-oriented diesel engines, ensuring that they will remain market leaders for decades to come. Based on well-proven diesel technology, the ME-B series provides engines geared to market requirements for:

electronic fuel-injection control

reliability

longer time between overhauls

better vessel manoeuvrability

very low life-cycle costs
