Wilh. Wilhelmsen of Norway and Wallenius Lines of Sweden are ordering eight new large car and truck carriers -- four from Hyundai Heavy Industries and four from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
The ships, 228 meters long, will have a carrying capacity for 8,000 units and will be deployed in the global services of their joint venture Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics.
Seven of the vessels will be delivered in 2011 and one will be delivered in 2012.
The companies said the ships would have an environmentally friendly design to reduce emissions to the air and to the sea.
Each company will own four of the ships.
The new ships boost the Wallenius Wilhelmsen order book to 45 vessels to be delivered through 2012.
