Feb 21, 2008 Shipping

Royal Arctic Line A/S has placed an order with Aker Yards Germany to build two ice-going containerships for arctic traffic between ports in Greenland and transatlantic destinations.

The Nuuk, Greenland-based shipping line will pay about 80 million euros ($117 million) for the two ships, which are scheduled to be delivered in the second and third quarters of 2010.

At 113 meters long and 22.7 meters wide, the two 8,550-deadweight-ton vessels will each have a total container stowage capacity of 587 TEUs with 237-FEU reefer sockets. Both ships will be equipped with a two-stroke main engine with an output of 7,860 kilowatts that will generate a service speed of 15.3 knots.
