The owner of Navigation Maritime Bulgare (NMB), KG Maritime Shipping, is offering 13 of its oldest ships for sale as a result of the strained global economic situation, The Sofia Echo reported on March 3 2009.
The newspaper said this proved a hard task since the market for old ships is practically frozen. Recycling them for scrap metal was also not a viable alternative due to the extremely low price of iron. So, the ships could remain chained to one another near Varna for months.
As a result of the financial crisis, the navigable staff of NMB were cut by 17 per cent in November 2008. Each ship's crew was reduced from 23 to 19 people. The four crew laid off were assigned other vocations on dry land. Most sailors would have a longer stay on land as up until now the period was two months.
