Guangdong-Taiwan direct container route starts service

Jan 21, 2009 Shipping

The Dongyue ship owned by China United Lines (CULINES) weighed its anchor and set sail from Shantou Container Terminal for Kaohsiung, Taiwan, at 5 pm on January 18, with a container full of cargo. The event signifies that the South China-Taiwan Direct Express Service (STD) of CULINES has begun to operate. This is the first cross-Straits regular direct container route between Guangdong ports and Taiwan.

Known as the century-old commercial port,Shantou is the nearest port city to Taiwan, only 180 nautical miles from Kaohsiung.

With the opening of STD, cargo from Shantou, eastern Guangdong, southern Jiangxi and southwest Fujian can be directly conveyed across the Straits without passing through a third location, therefore notably shrinking the transportation time between Chinese mainland and Taiwan as well as raising transportation efficiency.
