Ship classification company Germanischer Lloyd recently moved into a bigger office in Mumbai to account for the growing shipbuilding industry in the country.
India's shipping industry in terms of order size now ranks eighth in the world, GL said in a statement. Eighteen months ago, it did not even figure in the top 20. Multipurpose vessels, heavy lift vessels, platform supply vessels as well as tankers are currently being built and on order with Germanischer Lloyd class in India. In order to meet the rising demand for classificatory services, GL has considerably increased its staff and has moved to a larger office in Mumbai. GL now employs 275 people in India.
Volkmar Wasmansdorff, GL's head of its Asia-Pacific region, said the company starting a Goa office in 2008 and plans more satellite offices in India this year.
