SWISS logistics giant Kuehne + Nagel has won a three-year contract from Emak, a member of the industrial Yama Group and European farm and garden machinery manufacturer, to manage its distribution centre in Italy.

A statement from Kuehne + Nagel said it has opened a newly built 10,500-square-metre warehouse adjacent to its existing 64,000-square-metre logistics facility in Santa Cristina e Bissone, south of Milan, that has been "specifically designed to host operations" for Emak.

Under the terms of the agreement, Kuehne + Nagel will handle more than 850 different Emak items, such as chainsaws, brush cutters, lawn mowers, pumps, hedge trimmers as well as related accessories and spare parts.

It is expected that 1.2 million cases - mostly machines - will be received annually from Emak's production facilities in Italy and the Far East and then stored, picked and loaded. Warehouse operations are supported by a radio frequency system with portable handhelds, to boost picking accuracy and productivity.

Outsourcing our warehousing activities to Kuehne + Nagel represents a decisive step to be more competitive and take on the challenge of the global markets. We need a global logistics provider since we are becoming a major player at international level. By providing us with sea- and road freight services in addition to the warehouse operations, Kuehne + Nagel will help us optimise and speed our flow management from production sites to out distributors' network around the world, said Emak logistics manager Andrea Cosmi.

Said K+N sales chief Paolo Guidi: Our ambition is to be a close partner for Emak, helping them to meet future key challenges in reinforcing their position in Europe and becoming a major player worldwide.
