IMO insists on tracking system

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is insisting on identification and tracking system on all ocean-going ships within a year. IMO’s new amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention comes into effect this month requiring all ship operators to test and install long-range identification and tracking systems (LRIT) within a year. LRIT will be a mandatory requirement on passenger ships, including high-speed craft, cargo ships of more than 300 gross tonnes and mobile offshore drilling units on international voyages. The amendments to IMO convention will also cover training requirements for ship security officers, the launching and recovery of fast rescuer boats and an amendment to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code.
