Malta Shipyards chairman and director John Cassar White has resigned from his post. Minister Austin Gatt accepted the resignation on Wednesday.
Mr Cassar White said in a letter to the Minister dated 30th December that he will be unable to continue carrying out his duties as chairman because of ‘personal and family health reasons’.
The Shipyards chairman will terminate his duties as from Monday just following the end of the Company's financial year.
Mr Cassar White thanked Minister Gatt for his support and his colleagues.
Meanwhile, Minister Gatt thanked Mr Cassar White on behalf of the government and expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the eight years of service.
"Since your appointment in January 1999 as Chairman of the various copmanies holding the shipyards' activities, significant reforms and re-structuring efforts have been carried out with the goal of turning around Malta Shipyards into a viable entity, standing on its own feet without the need of government subsidies. The extent to which this has been attained is certainly independent of your abilities and commitment to the goal itself," the Minister concluded.
Last May, Mr Cassar White had decided to resign following press reports that he was an adviser to Opposition and Malta Labour Party (MLP) Leader Alfred Sant. Investments Minister Austin Gatt had rejected the resignation.
