Croatia shipyard privatization to start this year

Croatia's Prime Minister Ivo Sanader says his government will start privatizing six government-owned shipyards by the end of the year.

Sanader is hoping that selling the shipyards will speed up Croatia's efforts to join the European Union.

The European Union has urged Croatia to speed up the restructuring of the shipyards to reach the final stage of negotiations to join by 2009. Croatia started membership talks in 2005.

Croatia is also promising to press ahead with efforts on another key sticking point, fighting organized crime.

Sanader was in Stockholm on Tuesday to meet Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
