The West Bengal Cabinet has given its assent for the shipyard project at an estimated investment of Rs.2,000 crores in East Midnapore district. The project will come up as a joint venture between the state government represented by Bengal Shipyard Ltd. and private players Apeejay Surrendra Group and Bharti Shipyard.
Disclosing this to newsmen, State Chief Secretary A.K. Deb said that the cabinet has also decided to acquire 500 acres at Badar, Bhangagora and Deulpota mouzas in Mahisadal and Sutahata police station areas for the project.
The ambitious project would offer direct employment to 3,000 and indirect employment to 600 people.
The West Bengal government would also work out a wide-ranging rehabilitation program for the people whose land would be purchased for the project.
Meanwhile, following the stiff opposition and violence by the Nandigram people, the State has put on hold its planned chemical hub project in the district and moved it to Nayachar Island close to Haldia.
The State chief secretary also indicated that the Cabinet decided to either purchase or acquire 500 acres at Guptamanipur in West Midnapore district for the auto components manufacturing plant, which will be set up by WBIDC, WBIIDC and SREI group.
For the unit of ninth Engineering Regiment to be put up by the Defense ministry, which had sought land earlier at Nabagram in Murshidabad district, the cabinet has determined to buy 250 acres.
