Idle ship capacity thought to be at 150,000-TEU level and growing

Nov 5, 2008 Shipping

AXS-Alphaliner puts the current idle containership capacity at 1.25 percent of the global fleet, about 150,000 TEUs of capacity.

In its weekly newsletter, AXS said a dozen ships between 5,000 and 8,500 TEUs in size are laid up in major Asian ports, with an expected buildup of idled 3,000 to 5,000-TEU ships coming in the next few weeks. Another 50 in the 1,000 to 2,000-TEU range are awaiting charter.
