The Seafarers' International Union, which last week endorsed Barrack Obama for president, has released a letter from the Democrat nominee for president that said, America needs a strong and vibrant U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.
That is why you and your members can continue to count on me to support the Jones Act (which also includes the Passenger Vessel Services Act) and the continued exclusion of maritime services in international trade agreements, the letter said.
Obama also expresses support for the continuation of the Maritime Security Program and cargo preference laws.
The letter to SIU president Michael Sacco can be seen at www.seafarers.org/HeardAtHQ/2008/Q3/Images/Seafarers%20Endorsement.pdf.
