Gold Star Line to withdraw from the trans-Tasman trade

Jul 18, 2008 Shipping

Gold Star Line is set to withdraw from the trans-Tasman trade, another victim of fuel costs, the Taranaki Daily News reports.

The service had been running for a mere six months operating a weekly trans-Tasman service using two vessels, the Australia Star and the New Zealand Star.

Before terminating the service, the company examined possible options that could keep the service afloat, including introducing a third ship and slowing the vessels down in order to save fuel.

The ships’ circuit included Auckland, New Plymouth, Timaru, Melbourne and Sydney.

Gold Star line was very popular with Taranaki exporters including Fonterra, Yarrows, Taranaki Sawmills, MCK Metals and Olex New Zealand.
