Mexican cops seize cocaine from HK-flagged container ship

Nov 2, 2007 Shipping

Police in Mexico have seized about 11 tonnes of cocaine from a Hong Kong-flagged ship, the Esmeralda, which arrived in the port of Manzanillo, Mexican authorities said yesterday.
It was one of the largest amounts of cocaine seized in the country, and the second major haul of drugs in a month, the attorney-general's office said.

Police found the narcotics on board the container ship when it sailed into Manzanillo on the Pacific coast from Colombia. There were no details of the ship's crew.

"So far, 10,516 packets of drugs have been counted weighing more than 11 tonnes ... one of the largest amounts of cocaine ever seized in this country's history," the attorney- general's office said in a statement.
