Danaos confirmed today that it has inked an order for five massive containerships from South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
The New York-listed boxship owner has agreed to pay $830m for the post-panamax, 12,600-teu newbuildings, with a charter arranged to a major international liner company for 12 years each, reports TradeWinds.
Although Danaos did not name the charterer, TradeWinds reported 21 September that the ships will go to South Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine at rates believed to be near $58,700 per day.
The purchase will be funded by a combination of cash and debt. The ships will be delivered gradually between January and August 2011.
