Samsung Heavy Industries said Tuesday that it has become the first company to complete research and development to build a 16,000 TEU container ship, which would be the world's largest.
With 20 percent more cargo capacity than the existing largest ship of 13,500 TEU, the new vessel would be able to hold 2.2 million 29-inch TVs or 3 million 60 kg adults. Its length (400 m) would be greater than the height of the Eiffel Tower (327 m).
The company also said that it won a US$1.37 billion order from Israeli shipping company Zim Line to build eight 12,000 TEU container ships.
The order brings Samsung Heavy's total number of container ship orders to 37, making it the market leader with a 30 percent share.
