EC clears Wilhelmshaven joint venture of Maersk, Eurogate

The European Commission on Friday said it has cleared A.P. Moller - Maersk's 30 percent acquisition of Eurogate's JadeWeserPort container terminal in Wilhelmshaven, Germany due to start operations in 2011.

Denmark's A.P. Moller - Maersk was not a party to the original concession agreement but will assume, under the joint venture, joint liability for the future obligations of Eurogate.

Eurogate plans for the new terminal include the handling of nearly 3 million TEUs for 2016. Up to 49 percent of the terminal's capacity will be dedicated to Maersk Line and/or its affiliates.

The commission concluded that the operation would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or in any substantial part of it, the EC said in a statement.
